Masterpieces of Zen Culture from Myoshinji and the affiliate temples in Kyushu and Ryukyu " 2010 January 1 Fri. to February 28 Sun. Special Exhibition Gallery ![]() Kyushu National Museum own project - Myoshinji Exhibition In 2009, "Myoshinji Exhibition" commemorated 650th anniversary for Muso Daishi was hold in Tokyo National Museum, Kyoto National Museum and Nagoya-city Museum, however, "Myoshinji Exhibition" in Kyushu National Museum is not a traveling exhibition. In addition to the treasures from Myoshinji, masterpieces from Myoshinji-related temples in Kyushu and Okinawa will also be displayed and that makes this exhibition very unique. 4 pieces National Treasures, 35 pieces of Important Cultural Properties and other new cultural assets Treasures related to Muso Daishi and also masterpieces of Zen culture will be shown. Besides, those from Kyushu and Okinawa will be the result of the newly conducted investigation and most of them are first time display. Buddhism are from Ryukyu kingdom will be gathered This is the very first time to have such a variety of Buddhism art from Ryukyu. Especially statue of Vajradhara from Torinji in Ishigaki-city, Okinawa is impressive. That is different from other statues shown in Kyoto or Kyushu, it has own irresistible spirit. Greeting "Masterpieces of Zen Culture from Myoshinji and the affiliate temples in Kyushu and Ryukyu" will start in Kyushu National Museum commemorated with 650th anniversary of Muso Daishi (Kanzan Egen, 1277-1360). Myoshinji, in Hanazono, Kyoto was built in 1337, as a Zen temple. It used to be a detached palace of Hanazono emperor and the founder is Kanzan Egen. Since then, it has been over 6centuries to become the center of Rinzai group, and it has over 3400 related temples. This exhibition holds inherited fine arts of Myoshinji and 120 pieces of cultural properties from Kyushu and Okinawa. It includes National treasures and Important cultural properties and many first time display. It would be the great opportunity to feel Zen culture of Myoshinji and the first chance to see Myoshinji group art in Kyushu and Ryukyu Buddhism art in modern time. Your visit is highly appreciated.
