" National Treasures EMAKI from Kyoto National Museum "

2008 March 22 Sat. to June 1 Sun.
Special Exhibition Gallery

In Kyushu National Museum, fine picture scrolls which are composite art of Japanese venerable picture and story will be exhibited.

"Emaki" means decorative scroll of illustrations of the story and it's Japanese representative art developed richly over the centuries. The images are not only beautiful but also convey thoughts of the ancients and amuse us fantastic stories and the collaboration between illustrations and poems.

Kyoto National Museum which was inaugurated since 1897 with cultural treasures associated with Kyoto would cooperate with us for this exhibition so that 26 pieces of fine items from Nara era to Muromachi era, including 9 pieces of national treasures and 13 pieces of important cultural assets (scheduled), that is about 150 scenes will be displayed.

These picture scrolls were collected by noble families who had loved the beauty or preserved by shrines and temples to carry down the stories of high rank monks. This exhibition would be great opportunity to come into contact with the bright traditional culture of Kyoto.
"National Treasure, Emaki (picture scroll) Exhibition" will be the first special event in Kyushu focusing historical picture scrolls. It would be our great pleasure that you could enjoy the world of enchanting picture scrolls.
